Sassy Lassie all dressed up

My dog, Maggie, a collie mix, is quite the sassy lass. A regular doggy diva, if you will. She has no problem voicing- er, barking- her opinion on everything and expects to be loved and pampered on her terms. Yep, she’s a typical princess, and she knows it!
I’m always cracking jokes about how she really ought to have her own tiara. I’ve actually seen such a thing for dogs in stores, but never really thought I would buy one. I was never much into doggy dress-up, really. I thought all the pampering, bathing, grooming and just keeping track of her leash and collar was enough. Then, some people I know decided to throw a costume party. A pet-friendly costume party.

Animal lovers who own their own pet store, Nan and Chad thought it would be a real hoot to have this dress-up gala and invite their friends to bring their furry babies along. Of course, they hoped we’d all join in the fun, get creative and arrive with our furry friends all dressed up as well.
What the heck, I thought. Why not? Could be fun. So I went shopping. I was somewhat disappointed in the beginning, as the choice of pet costumes seemed so limited. Sure, there were some interesting ideas out there, but a lot of them were aimed at the smaller breeds or just were not what I had envisioned. My Maggie isn’t just any dog, and I wasn’t going to settle for less than what my princess deserved.

I had this image in my mind of a taffeta and tiara clad furry debutante strolling around in all her glory. Maybe a bit extreme. I don’t know. I was having fun, and she is mine to spoil, so I forged ahead.
Then, I found it! The Pretty Princess Dog Costume. Affordable and available in all sizes, this pet costume was perfect for getting my poochie ready for the ball. The dress is in 2 shades of pink with a nice gold trim along the bodice. It comes complete with “stuffed arms” for that fluffy look, a veil and tiara.

My sassy little diva was up for some extra pampering. With a perfect fit, Maggie looked beautiful, and she had no doubt about that. My sassy little diva strolled over to the mirror and admired herself once she was dressed. It was her way of saying she approved.
Maggie was a hit at the party. The belle of the ball in her new princess pet costume.

Reindeer Dog Antlers

This isn’t quite a full pet costume, but it’s so easy and gets plenty of attention.  Reindeer antlers aren’t for Dog Antlersevery dog though, your going to need a well mannered dog with a semi large head.  Greyhounds don’t have the biggest heads, but it was big enough to work.

This Christmas holiday accessory was meant for a person’s head, but I think it looks better on Fancy Pants the greyhound.

This antler headband cost only $2 at a local, large retail store and there were many different ones to choose from.  Fancy Pants loved the attention she was getting while wearing  the reindeer antler headband.  I figured she would be annoyed and shake them off, but she didn’t seem to mind at all.  In fact she seems to love posing for the camera!

Perfect for the Christmas holiday season, a cool headband will make your dog the hit of the dog park or pet store.  The best part is how cheap and easy this accessory is.  Only $2 right in the middle of the Xmas shopping season.  You could probably get 8 for a dollar if you grab some after Christmas day.  Stock up for next year!  After Christmas sales are a great way to stock up on pet costume accessories.  IMG_0290Stores are trying to get rid of everything and that’s your chance to score the biggest deals of the year!   Nearly anything Christmas decoration can be used either as a costume or as an accessory to a costume.

Anatomy of a Pet Freak

I remember the first time I met Carla. She had a big purse with a little chihuahua head sticking out of it. Everywhere Carla went, Chloe went. Chloe may be a special dog, but Carla is an extra special dog owner. Chloe has graced the cover of pet magazines, been on TV shows, and won numerous pet and costume contests. Carla and Chloe live the life of stars within the dog costume community.
I had no idea there was a community until I met them. This is when I first learned about pet costumes, pet costume shows, and pet costume contests.

Carla knows all of the dog clothing websites in and out. She knows what dog clothing sucks, what’s good, and what needs to be manufactured according to upcoming trends. She can critique each major dog clothing website in detail and has created business plans for her own dog clothing website. That is hardcore dedication and passion.  She taught me that buying a pet costume is not enough, it is just the beginning.  Once you decide on a piece of clothing, you have to plan the accessories.  Not only nails and headwear for the dog, but details of your own clothing to match!  That’s what puts you ahead of the crowd and on top of the game.

They were fun to hang out with. Carla is a pretty attractive chick and usually has a drink in her hand. Chloe is an equally attractive chihuahua. With her nails always painted and usually wearing some kind of ahead of the trend doggie clothing.
Before I forget, you can check out Carla’s blog at Mediocrity Mockery and Chloe’s Myspace.

Carla and Chloe are the inspiration for this website and the only reason I have made any costumes or clothing for my own cat and dogs.  Though they have moved from the Big D to the Big Apple, they’re canine costume inspirations are just a click away.

So there you have it, there’s my muse in the pet costume niche.  Chloe and Carla and the most hardcore, bad ass, dedicated and motivational duo I have ever met, in any area of interest.

Dog or Cat Scarf

Here is a simple, FREE accessory you can make for your precious dog, car, farret, or other small pet.

My cat, Kricket, is not a big fan of costumes or pet clothing, but she will tolerate a scarf for a little while.  cat scarf pet costumeBrowsing through my closet, I came across my sock box. I probably go through 10 or 12 pairs of socks a week, wash them on the weekend, then they go back in the box, leaving the same pairs in regular rotation. So I started digging, wondering what was underneath my regular rotation sock. What I found was about 30 pairs of old stretched out socks, rarely used dress socks, and wildly colorful socks I have no business owning. I thought, there has to be some use for these wonderful veterans of the foot accessory army.

Cat scarf!

Now of course, this is probably better suited to your normal small dog outfitter, but hell, even a snake could wear a pet scarf. And with a cost of NOTHING, ZERO, FREE, you can’t go wrong.
cat scarf - dog scarfPlus it takes 5 minutes to make. Your scarf wearing animal will be the envy of every pet and pet owner.

  • Step 1 – Find an old sock. Now this is probably the hardest part of the whole process. So many old socks to choose from! Make sure it will not be too tight and choke your lovely pet!! I went with a plain white sock for two reasons. My cat, Kricket, is black and white, so it matches. And secondly, it was the biggest, loosest sock in the box making it easier to put on a reluctant cat.
  • Step 2 – Once you find the perfect foot warmer turned neck warmer, bust out your scissors. Don’t run.
  • Step 3 – Cut out the end of the sock. Mine was a crew style sock, so i cut just behind the crew line. You may want to put the sock on your foot one last time at this point, especially if you have pretty toes.

  • Step 4 – Cut off the leg part of the sock. My sock was a mid calf length so i cut it off right if front of the ankle, leaving only 5 or 6 inches, the part of the sock that goes around the middle of your foot. Now, if you have a mid calf or knee sock, you may be able to use the top portion of your sock as a scarf as well. Just remember, you don’t want the scarf to be too long and bunch up excessively. Although, some bunching up does look good.
  • Step 5 – Install! I had to be sneaky to get this on my cat, but once it was on, she didn’t really care, and she looks so stylish!
